Racism and violence were non-existent in this world, When people were aware to fight for identity'- Terzanelle for Octavia Estelle Butler, Poem by Marieta Maglas

Marieta Maglas
About This Quote

The writer of the poem, Marieta Maglas, was born in 1939 to a family of poor Cebuano farmers. She was the first child of her parents, having no siblings. Before she was born her parents were already married and had two children together. They were not married in the traditional sense as many cultures of Asia.

However, that did not stop her parents from having romantic feelings for each other. They lived together for 27 years until her mother died. The source of sexual ecstasy on which they based their marriage was love rather than religion or culture.

This is apparent by the first two lines of this poem. Racism and violence were non-existent in this world because people were aware of their cultural identity. It would have been impossible for her parents to marry if they did not know who they were as a person because they shared a cultural identity with thousands of other people.
